Beyond the Mammogram: Navigating the Care Pathway from Screening to Solutions

Published by the Breast Cancer Collective - The Collective Pulse, Volume 1, Issue 2

Early Detection Starts with Access
Each year, millions of women receive an abnormal screening result or a request for additional imaging. The statistics that prove that early detection saves lives come alive in the testimonies from Breast Cancer Collective patients and friends, and in Dr. Weintritt’s clinical work with Virginia Cancer Specialists. Our goal remains to expand access not just to mammography, but to cutting-edge diagnostics. Like many of our efforts, this work is realized by the community, the collective. Partners on the front lines like Fairfax Radiology catalyze an informed care journey with expert imaging. Hereditary cancer testing at Myriad Genetics and genomic technology from Agendia provide patients with an incredibly personalized, comprehensive picture of risk that not only improves individualized treatment but extends to preventative conversations with loved ones. As the Breast Cancer Collective continually strives to provide stellar and equitable care, a screening mammogram and the biopsy that follows are an essential starting point; but, rather than a definitive conclusion, this diagnosis represents only the beginning of breast cancer care.
From Diagnosis to Personalized Care Options
Beyond the mammogram, the Breast Cancer Collective continues to address systemic and economic disparities in our provision of care. As a practitioner-led foundation, collaboration with technological partners who share our caliber of care is crucial in meeting patient needs.
In the operating room, Stryker Breast Division’s fluorescence imaging and MOLLI technology enable precise procedures to target and remove cancer.

After removal of the tumor, testing suites such as ImpediMed’s SOZO lymphedema and body composition assessment lower the risk of chronic problems and help enable risk reduction in the survivorship phase of care. Partners like Axogen embody the idea that Breast Cancer treatment is more than simple removal of a tumor. Their Avance nerve graft and efforts on advocacy and teaching of nerve repair techniques help restore sensory feeling to the chest and nipple, offering a full life beyond surgery. Every year at the Breast Cancer Collective’s Walk to Bust Cancer, our Circle of Strength offers a moving, visual representation of survivorship. As patients celebrate milestones and continue to monitor long-term health, a new frontier of technology called circulating tumor DNA, provided by companies like Natera can both monitor treatment response and detect any recurrence or residual disease sooner than conventional methods.
From the initial screening to thoughtful, patient-forward solutions, The Breast Cancer Collective is committed to increasing the survivability of breast cancer. For everyone. Our collaboration with the technological sector and the expertise of Dr. Weintritt equips patients with knowledge about their unique circumstances and tailors care accordingly.
Clinical Perspective: Moving from Detection to Action
To examine how diagnostic precision alters patient trajectories, we spoke with Dr. David Weintritt, MD, FACS, board-certified breast surgical oncologist and Founder and President of the Breast Cancer Collective.
Q: How does your passion for equitable care intersect with your pursuit of excellence in clinical practice?
A: “While the Breast Cancer Collective is best known as an organization that helps provide life-saving screening services throughout the DC area and the Bronx, our core mission also includes the pursuit of cutting edge technology. One of the reasons I chose to dedicate my career to the fight against breast cancer was the need for and promise that technology would match my surgical training to provide better outcomes. The technology partners that we work with have fulfilled that calling. From camera systems that allow me to map the flow of cancer and see things that are invisible to the naked eye, to advanced nerve conduits allowing restoration of sensation after mastectomy, to science that allows DNA to be extracted and tested to predict cancer occurrence and recurrence before other traditional methods would find it.”
Community Navigation & Direct Support
No woman should have to navigate diagnostic results, insurance barriers, or procedural uncertainty alone. If you or someone in your collective needs assistance accessing or funding diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, or MRIs, the Breast Cancer Collective provides direct navigation support and connections to regional clinical partners.
Meet the Innovators at the 2026 Pink Gala
The Breast Cancer Collective convenes clinicians, patients, and healthcare partners working to improve breast cancer care. At our upcoming Pink Gala this September, experience an interactive, close-up look at the diagnostic, surgical, and genomic platforms highlighted in this issue. Whether you are a health professional with whom this technology resonates, or a community member that cares deeply about making change, “Every year our ability to fight breast cancer and keep patients healthy improves, and the funds we receive through the Breast Cancer Collective allow us to provide these services to all we serve” (Dr. David Weintritt, founder and president).
Thank you, for being a part of our Collective.
